The Philips CM10 TEM is a stable instrument, suited to both undergraduate teaching and research. At this point, it is used primarily for biological samples, but it is also used for materials research on nanoparticles. Film is used for imaging, and an Epson 4990 Photo flat-bed scanner is then used to generate high quality digital images from the negatives.

Bio 550, Transmission Electron Microscopy Techniques uses this microscope and is offered annually in the Fall semester, generally at capacity. Like the SEM course (Bio 552), emphasis is placed on the development of good projects and the skills needed to carry out studies on biological specimens with the TEM.
